BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A teacher in the Hackensack School District has filed a lawsuit in Superior Court saying she was dismissed in May 2023 because she was pregnant, according to reports.

Angelica Paton, 26, worked as a special education teacher at Hackensack High School. Reports in NJ.com and the Record say she had a master's degree and began teaching with a specialty in English, but was moved to special education classes, she says, despite not having the certification.

She was let go on May 1, 2023 despite positive reviews, the suit claims. School officials did not respond to requests for comment from the media.
