Plainfield Community Members Garner Resources at Housing Authority of Plainfield Joanne Hollis Gardens&rsquo; Community Resource Center Spring Health and Wellness Fair 
Nearly 40 Organizations Seeking to Assist Low- and Middle-Income Families at Community Event On Wednesday, April 24, The Housing Authority of Plainfield (HAP) welcomed residents and the Plainfield community at &ldquo;The Spring Health and Wellness Awareness Day of Community Resources 2024&rdquo; at Joanne Hollis Gardens (JHG). This event included information regarding resources offered by the City of Plainfield and Union County, child care, cancer care, funeral home services, LGBTQ workforce development, community services, and public safety as well as senior citizen, youth, disability, and health and mental health services for families and children. 

Community Resource Center Volunteer and sixteen-year JHG resident Bridgette Graham says, &ldquo;The center has been a great success. We have been doing very, very, very good in the community.&rdquo; She explains, &ldquo;I really love what I do working with other residents. More and more people have sought out our services and I&rsquo;m proud that we have this center to offer to people because if you participate it will work for you. Residents often thank me for connecting them with Mr. Graham.&rdquo;

Graham states, &ldquo;We are pleased to host a spring resource fair to complement the fall and winter health and wellness fairs. It takes time for people to get comfortable and understand the services that are available in the community and we&rsquo;re excited to offer such a wide variety of organizations at today&rsquo;s event.&rdquo;

On Wednesday, April 10, the Housing Authority of Plainfield (HAP) and Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church held a roundtable discussion with executive community leaders addressing solutions for homelessness prevention. The event, titled, &ldquo;Leveraging Community Partnership with Executive Community Stakeholders Initiatives for 2024&rdquo; was co-hosted by HAP&rsquo;s Joanne Hollis Gardens (JHG) Community Resource Center and served as a community behavioral health platform for crisis management through educational awareness.

HAP Executive Director Randall M. Wood stated, &ldquo;The quality of life for families and children of Union County has been improved drastically as a result of this initiative, and it's the efficient collaboration of community leaders that has made it possible.&rdquo;
JHG Community Resource Center Director of Community Programs Eric Graham, PHM said, &ldquo;The Leveraging of Community Stakeholders Initiative meetings are all-inclusive with an approach of obtaining wraparound services for the entire family through results-driven communication and community partners to decrease the duplication of services and make a significant impact to all residents.&rdquo;
The Leveraging of Community Partnership with Leaders of Stakeholders Initiative was created in 2009 by Eric Graham at the Housing Authority of Plainfield and remains in an upbeat effect, has been a strong all-inclusive tool with the community affiliates in engaging various executive partners to build an impactful relationship that has worked for many years.
Since the initiative&rsquo;s inception, the quality of of life for many families and children in and around Union County has been improved through these results-driven wraparound services which includes: education awareness for realistic resources and sustainability that has provided advocacy for homelessness crisis prevention, team building, cultural diversity, gender transparency, behavioral health, dual addiction treatment, youth empowerment, employment opportunities, senior services, and transformational change through its efficient community collaboration of leaders.

Executive Community Leaders Came Together for a Roundtable Discussion to Battle Homelessness Crisis

The Housing Authority of Plainfield (HAP) celebrated Black History Month with residents and the greater Plainfield community on Friday, March 1 at Richmond Towers. The event was sponsored by The Plainfield Culture and Heritage Foundation, HAP, Premier Community Development Corporation, and the Joanne Hollis Gardens &amp; Richmond Towers Resident Associations. Guest speaker Pastor Mae Belin led the discussion titled Black History Month 2024: Black Resistance. 
Proceeds from the event will go toward the HAP/PCDC Scholarship Fund and support the Plainfield community to prosper. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,000 and are awarded in pursuit of post-high school studies at college, university, or post-secondary educational institutions. Longtime HAP resident Annie Lynn often attends the annual Black History Month event at the housing authority, &ldquo;This is always a very successful, very informative event. I enjoy volunteering to put on this event and it&rsquo;s encouraging and rewarding to be a part of.&rdquo;
HAP Executive Director Randall M. Wood said, &ldquo;Every February I place great importance on taking the time to honor Black History Month. As an organization deeply connected with the Black community, all of us at the Housing Authority of Plainfield are celebrating the legacy of the incredible Black leaders who came before us. Acknowledging their accomplishments and understanding our past helps us shape the future of American history.&rdquo;
The housing authority supports uplifting and recognizing Black leaders on a local level as well as those who advocate for Black rights. Maya Angelou once said, "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." To further promote this notion, HAP has reestablished its Employee of the Year Program in 2024. HAP Presents Black History Month Event with Proceeds Benefiting Scholarships in Plainfield Community

On December 14, the Housing Authority of Plainfield (HAP) welcomed residents and the Plainfield community at its Holiday Health Screening NJ Mobile Unit and Community Service Providers Event at Joanne Hollis Gardens&rsquo; (JHG) HAP Center located at 543 West 3rd Street. The festive and informational event was the second installment of the JHG Community Resource Center&rsquo;s&nbsp;(JHGRC) info and referral fair which was held a few months ago. The December event was organized by the JHGRC and brought together several organizations, such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Essex, Hudson, &amp; Union Counties; Equal Opportunity Support Services; HOPES CAP Inc.; Jewish Family Services of Central New Jersey; Neighborhood Health Services Corporation; Partnership for Maternal &amp; Child Health of Northern New Jersey; Prevention Links; Proceed Inc.; ScreenNJ; and Urban League of Union County. As part of the holiday celebration, Santa Claus (First And Fourth Wards Councilman-At-Large Barry N. Goode) took photos with children and there were toy giveaways, coat and clothing donations provided by the Non-Profit Clothing and Furniture Distribution Center as part of the clothes and toys uplifting initiative, resource linkages in the community, and cancer screenings provided to attendees inside the ScreenNJ mobile unit. 
Rose Diggs, resident leader and JHG food pantry logistical coordinator, prepared a free lunch for the agencies in attendance without reservation in partnership with the JHGRC. &ldquo;I help as much as I can and I enjoy working together to assist with events and helping families in need. Mr Graham and the rest of the team have been doing a great job serving the community,&rdquo; said Rose Diggs. 
City officials in attendance included Vice President &amp; Fourth Ward Councilwoman Terri Briggs-Jones and there was also departmental engagement from the City of Plainfield who extended their assistance during the event. Mt. Olive Baptist Church provided bible materials for the residents. Ten new bicycles were raffled off, adding even more joy to children's holiday happiness.
The JHGRC has been actively putting together a consortium group of organizations called the JHGRC Coalition Group that share a common interest of family self sufficiency and facilitate wraparound services, referred to as the Wheel of Opportunity, that are available in the area. The JHGRC&rsquo;s Director of Community Programs Eric Graham, PHM stated, &ldquo;I am honored to say that the community stakeholders have been very welcoming and passionate about addressing the needs of families without adjustment. We had a fantastic turnout and the families and children had a magnificent time at our holiday health screening event. We are immensely grateful to all of our sponsors and ScreenNJ for providing an outstanding job offering their mobile health unit for both male and female residents.&rdquo; ScreenNJ is an initiative from Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the New Jersey Department of Health, and healthcare and community organizations across New Jersey that promotes the importance of cancer screening, early detection, and prevention.
HAP Executive Director Randall M. Wood remarked, &ldquo;We continue to offer inspirational, educational, and wellness events such as these here at the Housing Authority of Plainfield and extend them to the greater Plainfield community. Thank you to all of our partner organizations for furthering our mission to enhance residents&rsquo; lives.&rdquo;

On December 21, HAP; HAP&rsquo;s 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Premier Community Development Corporation; and Sisters of Solomon hosted the Ninth Annual Joanne Hollis Toy Drive at Joanne Hollis Gardens. This event is also made possible by Councilman Steve G. Hockaday, Esq. and Councilwoman-elect Julienne Cherry and is open to all HAP residents. PCDC works in conjunction with the City of Plainfield to improve neighborhoods for local residents and focuses on the development and rehabilitation of quality housing for the improvement of family lives in urban communities.
