Calico, the decorative fabric and custom design services retailer, recently relocated its Short Hills store to 115 Summit Avenue in downtown Summit, New Jersey. “There has been a store in the Short Hills-Summit area for decades,” noted Store Manager Patti Schmidt, who also has an extensive history with the company. She is marking her 22th year with Calico—formerly known as Calico Corners—with a store move and total revamp!

This new Calico store was planned as an easy-to shop design studio concept. The updated store plan combines efficient technology with a friendly touch. Calico has a long tradition of building customer relationships with personal service—either in-store or in-home professional design consultation at no charge. In-home appointments with Calico designers are available on weekdays and Saturdays.

The Luxe Collection is a special line of to-the-trade designer fabrics available by the yard at Calico.

“This is a great time to start a decorating project!” enthused Schmidt. “Our Quick Ship lined drapery panels come in pleated or grommet styles and a variety of colors. You can select from a great linen blend or a 100% silk fabric.” These draperies and sets of hardware ship free in 15 business days, she added. “Customers can have them installed before Thanksgiving and the holidays!” Other custom window treatments can be ordered, choosing from hundreds of fabrics or Hunter Douglas blinds and shades—and those will take a little longer.

The overall feeling of the Summit store is light and bright with hardwood maple-finished floors and high ceilings. The white wood wall racks and freestanding wood fixtures display fabrics by collection and color scheme. For inspiration, new fabrics from Scalamandré join collections from designers Vern Yip, Christiane Lemieux and Barbara Barry.

“Create with Confidence” is the byword at Calico—as illustrated by the swatch wall of 160+ fabrics that are ready to ship. Swatches are available for all fabrics, whether shopping in store or online.

Custom upholstered furniture is presented in room settings, with wallpapered walls and coordinated draperies to showcase Calico’s custom craftsmanship. Customers can visualize fabric choices on furniture frames through a proprietary C360 virtual app on iPads.

The open layout of the store allows consumers to walk freely around the space while experiencing a selection of what Calico has to offer. The shop includes a design area with counter-height tables, bar stools and outlets for tablets and phones, creating a comfortable, inviting workspace for consultation and collaboration with experienced staff designers.

Furniture vignettes showcase Calico’s line of custom upholstered furniture made to order with exactly the fabric chosen by the customer on the frame. Cushion firmness can also be selected. Furniture is delivered directly to the customer’s home some weeks later.

How are customers responding to the new Calico concept? “They are thrilled,” observed Schmidt. “Customers have commented that the store is so spacious, so bright and welcoming—and they love the layout. Our designers try to make the decorating process easy and enjoyable—as it should be!”

The new Calico store is located at 115 Summit Avenue (directly across from the Summit Avenue/Deforest Avenue parking lot) in Summit, NJ 07901. Telephone (973) 218-0159. Calico is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm. In addition to the Summit location, there are Calico stores in East Hanover and Ridgewood, NJ.

A storyboard collage of fabrics from prints to performance, plush solid textures to a velvet cheetah design, create a menu of possibilities for a room makeover at Calico.
