Yes, New Jersey can be expensive, but there are plenty of places where you can get a good bang for your buck. One market researcher has outlined a number of places that offer the best value.

Niche.com has composed its latest list of best places to buy a house in New Jersey, ranking them based on home values, property taxes, home ownership rates, housing costs and real estate trends. The ranking is derived from data from the U.S. Census, FBI and other data sources.

None of New Jersey's top 100 made the national list. But there are plenty of places that offer the right balance between safety and affordability — even if each of them deals with some of the same issues affecting many communities across the United States.

One review mentions that Hopewell Township, which tops the list, may have had "drug problems" in the high school. "However, I moved to this town after graduating and do not experience these first hand. The cops are reliable, and are very quick to pay attention to the law," according to the review.

"There have been minor occurrences in the past two years I've been living here of law issues, however they were solved quickly. The roads are okay, but there are many potholes and a big circle in the middle of town that often causes accidents."
