48,000 Strong: Dune Grass Added To Aid Ortley Beach Dunes

Volunteers from Monmouth and Ocean counties participated.

Toms River officials shared a thank you on Facebook to volunteers who participated in efforts to plant dune grass in Ortley Beach recently.

Volunteers came from Monmouth and Ocean counties out to help with planting the grass -- putting 48,000 plants into the dunes total, according to officials.

Paul Jeffrey, president of the Ortley Beach Taxpayers and Voters Association, said he estimated there were between 150 and 200 volunteers on the beach on a cold, windy Saturday.

“The Township thanks everyone who came together on a cold, windy Saturday to plant dune grass in Ortley Beach. The day was successful and we couldn’t have done it without the help of the community supporters!” the post noted.

Planting dune grass had been an annual event in Toms River but Nov. 13 was the first time since Hurricane Sandy that the plantings had been done.
