WAYNE, NJ — A Wayne church will send more than 2,600 pairs of shoes overseas to help entrepreneurs and families in developing countries, and keep the shoes out of local landfills.

The Packanack Community Church recently completed a shoe drive fundraiser through the group Funds2Orgs, which will be distributed in Cambodia, Ghana, and Haiti.

The shoes will provide inventory for people who run micro-enterprises — small stalls or shops where they sell items to help support their families. More than 70 percent of the global population uses repurposed shoes and clothing, the fundraising group estimates.

On Feb. 21, congregation members gathered the collected shoes out front of the church on Lake Drive East, before a truck came to take the donations on to their next journey.

In total, church members sent 106 bags of shoes to Funds2Orgs, each which had 25 pairs of shoes. The shoes will help provide an economic lifeline to those living in developing nations, according to the fundraising group. Funds2Orgs also provides a check to the donating organization.
