North Jersey Senior Living Facility Pays Tribute to 98-Year-Old Veteran

Henry Perkowski served four honorable years during WWII and is the oldest living solider from his division from the Battle of the Bulge.

Sunrise of Edgewater would like to pay tribute to 98-year-old Henry Perkowski, a beloved resident of their senior living facility, for his service to our country.

At the age 26, Henry was drafted and trained with the 3rd Army Division at Camp Polk in Louisiana, where he learned how to drive a tanker truck, target practice and how to throw hand grenades in a timely fashion.

Henry served four honorable years during WWII and is the oldest living solider from his division from the Battle of the Bulge. He has five battle star decorated medals including a bronze star ordered from the President of the United States and a New Jersey medal for Distinguished Military Service.

Today, Henry is a valued member of Sunrise of Edgewater’s community. Every evening, Henry writes a summary of the day’s events and slips it under our executive director’s door for her to read first thing in the morning, according to Suzanne Robertson, Activities and Volunteer Coordinator at Sunrise of Edgewater. Robertson said most days, Henry will be found walking the path to the river to feed the geese or his beloved stray cat, Henriette.

“Our entire community here at Sunrise of Edgewater salutes Henry along with all of our other veterans who served this country with such bravery and honor,” Robertson said.
