Bergen Student's Essay Pays Off For Teacher, Classmates In Applebee's Contest

A Bergen teacher is one of four in NJ to win $500 for her classroom. A student wrote an essay on her for an Applebee's-sponsored contest.

OLD TAPPAN, NJ — A Bergen County teacher is one of four in New Jersey to win $500 for her classroom thanks to a student's essay about her.

Kristen Acheson, who teaches fourth grade at T. Baldwin Demarest Elementary, was selected as a winner of the Doherty-owned Applebee's Above and 'Bee'yond Teacher Essay Contest, according to a news release.

One of Acheson's students, Emma, wrote an essay that "detailed the many ways Mrs. Acheson is a superlative educator," the news release said

The Hackensack Applebee's, which is owned by Doherty Inc., will host a special party for her and her class at the end of the year in addition to the $500 check.

“Our restaurants are committed to giving back to the local community now more than ever," said Kevin Coughlin, director of operations for Applebee’s New Jersey. "We’re honored to support local schoolteachers and want to recognize their dedication and hard work amidst the ongoing pandemic.”

The essay contest was run by Applebee’s restaurants in NJ that are owned and operated by franchisee Doherty Enterprises. Doherty also has Applebee's in Florida, Georgia, and New York.
