Westwood Looks To Win Another State Football Championship

The Cardinals were winners in 2014 and 2015, but Mahwah, their opponent this year, won the championship last year.

WESTWOOD, N.J. — The Westwood High School Cardinals will look to win another North 1 Group 2 championship Sunday.

The Cardinals will face off against the Mahwah High School Thunderbirds at 4 p.m. Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

Westwood won the title in 2013 and 2014, but Mahwah won it last year by defeating Glen Rock.

Mahwah defeats Westwood the first game of the season 24-6.

Westwood quarterback Sean Hopkins is one of only 20 quarterbacks in the state to throw for more than 2,000 yards this season while rushing for nearly 800 and scoring 25 touchdowns, NJ.com reported.

Westwood's defense has allowed just 12 points a game and held their opponents to single digits on the scoreboard five times, including two shutouts.

Mahwah, on the other hand, has averaged 35 points a game and notched more than 40 points three times, including a season-high of 49 against Ramsey.
