An application which requested a convenience store use variance was rejected by the Westwood Zoning Board this month.

An application to build a five-unit strip mall at the former Chevrolet of Westwood on Kinderkamack Road was denied by the Westwood Zoning Board earlier this month.

The developer had requested a convenience store use variance to allow a 7-Eleven to occupy a portion of the space, which board members said was one of their concerns before voting against the plan.

The same developer has also filed an application for a similar strip mall at the empty lot across the street.

The site is located on Kinderkamack Road next to the cemetery near the Emerson border. It's in a "limited business" zone, meaning that only some specific retail uses, like large appliance stores or antique stores, or allowed.

The property's owner previously said he believed that none of the permitted uses could be successful at the site, which has been empty for several years since the Chevy dealer closed.
