Nor’easter In Bergen County: What To Know For Tuesday

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Monday's snowstorm brought plenty of snow and dangerous road conditions, and forecasts say there's more to come.

The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy snow, with totals potentially reaching 14-22 inches bringing "near blizzard conditions" to much of the tri-state area into Tuesday. Read more: Nor'easter Snowfall Totals In Bergen County

Many schools in the county shifted plans or canceled classes outright Monday. Some are returning to virtual learning Tuesday, but others have canceled classes again, including:

Gov. Phil Murphy announced Monday that the state's six vaccine mega-sites would remain closed Tuesday, in anticipation of the continuing storm.

Strong winds are also expected, which the NWS said could down tree limbs or power lines.

"We are about to enter the worst of this storm. It is going to be very bad for the next 12 hours," Gov. Phil Murphy said on Twitter Monday.

Murphy said the early afternoon would be the "teeth" of the storm, and the state Department of Transportation had 3,900 pieces of equipment deployed to keep up with worsening road conditions.

The NWS said travel could be "difficult to impossible" during the storm, and, if comments from Bergen County officials are any indication, that equipment will be needed.

Speaking from Route 17 in Ridgewood, Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton said roadways were "kind of treacherous" and urged residents to stay off the road. Tuesday

Light snow likely. Cloudy, with a steady temperature around 28. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. North wind around 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Tuesday Night

A 50 percent chance of light snow before 1am. Cloudy, with a low around 27. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. Northwest wind 10 to 14 mph.

The National Weather Service labeled the "major" system a "nor'easter" since it's expected to produce strong, sustained damaging winds and precipitation over a 24-hour period on Monday and into Tuesday.

The storm was expected to be fierce enough to cause power outages and more was expected to arrive overnight and into Tuesday (see the forecast below).
