Man Arrested After Burglarizing Home, Stealing Truck From Driveway: PD

The homeowner followed the thief, police say.

BABYLON, NY — A Babylon man was arrested Sunday after he burglarized a home and stole a truck from the driveway, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, the incident took place on Araca Road in Babylon on Sunday at 7:06 a.m.

First Precinct officers responded to a 911 call reporting that an unknown person had stolen a vehicle from the driveway of the home; the homeowner followed the man in the stolen 2020 Dodge Ram and was able to stop him in front of another home a short distance away on The Crescent, police said.

Daniel Shiels, 43,entered the home while three residents were inside and stole two sets of car keys before leaving in the Ram, police said.

Shiels was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary; third-degree grand larceny; and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, police said.

He was held overnight at the Third Precinct for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Monday, police said.
