FARMINGDALE, NY — ScrubzBody Skin Care Products of Farmingdale is celebrating 18 years.

Roberta Perry originally founded the skin care business in her home. Her shop has seen multiple iterations since, but settled on 245 Main St., Farmingdale, in 2017.

A few months before ScrubzBody was born, Perry created the sugar scrub as a way to make her own skin feel better. Her late sister, Michelle, had some retail background and pushed Perry to make a batch to sell at a local craft fair. She agreed, and they sold every jar.

Michelle came up with the name Scrubz, calling Roberta and interrupting a meeting she was in to let her know she had "the perfect name," she said.

"We grew from my kitchen to my garage to a small shop in Bethpage to our present store and event space in Farmingdale," Perry told Patch. "It’s been a fabulous journey so far!"

ScrubzBody makes 100 percent active ingredient, hand-crafted skin care products, which she says makes skin feel nourished and pampered. But the true secret to her shop's success is customer service, she said.

"We have always treated each customer, no matter if it were at a craft fair or at our store, like our only customer," Perry said. "We are so grateful for their business and their loyalty that we go over and above as often as possible."

It's no surprise then that the people are Perry's favorite part of owning the business.

"I love making our customers feel better about themselves," she said. "I love how our products become a 'me-time' treat for them and I love that we offer an experience that is not only pampering, but necessary. I also loved working with my late sister, my parents and my best friend since 1977, Wendy."

Perry said she loves having her store in Farmingdale and being a part of the "joy that is Small Business Long Island."

"We love the business and regular community here, the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce is incredible and helpful and the people are amazing, so what I really have to say is thank you, thank you, thank you for embracing us, for your loyalty and for your love," Perry said.

The most challenging aspect of running her business is marketing on a budget, Perry said. She said she has become adept at finding ways to get publicity for her brand. One method has been aligning with charities, whether in the form of a yearly fundraiser she used to host or offering a wholesale/retail arrangement with a portion of proceeds benefiting the charity.

"This gains us traction and allows us to do something nice at the same time," she said.

ScrubzBody is having a big birthday sale to celebrate, Perry said.

People can use the code "18getsyou36," the coupon code for 36 percent off.

"Eighteen for me and 18 for my late sister, Michelle," Perry said.

The sale is set to run until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday online and 7 p.m. at the store itself.
