Weekend Lifeguards Return To Barrett Beach, Talisman On Fire Island

Officials at Fire Island National Seashore restored limited service to the area after some conditions improved.

FIRE ISLAND, NY — Conditions have improved somewhat, so the national parks service will bring back some services at Barrett Teach/Talisman.

The parks department had announced in June the decision to cut back visitor services, saying the narrowing of the beach during the winter no-named storms and piping plover nesting had made accessing the area via park vehicle, boat or polaris extremely difficult.

There now will be lifeguard service in the area on the weekends.

“One of the conditions that did not allow for lifeguard service has changed, allowing Fire Island National Seashore to redeploy lifeguards to Barrett Beach/Talisman. Beginning Saturday, July 13, lifeguards will be on site Saturday and Sunday for the remainder of the 2024 summer season.” said Fire Island National Seashore Superintendent Alexcy Romero. “Shoaling and limited driving area due to the winter no named storms will still limit other visitor services.”

Lifeguarded beaches, restroom maintenance and other visitor services are available at
Watch Hill and Sailors Haven.
