Liberty is Investing in Infrastructure to Benefit our Customers

At Liberty, our focus is on our commitment to our customers. In the past year alone, Liberty New York Water replaced more than 30,000 feet of water mains that help maintain water quality and prevent main breaks. We also replaced 500 service connections, more than 2,300 meters, and 40 fire hydrants, with 10 new fire hydrants installed, ensuring adequate and safe fire protections throughout our communities. In total, in the past five years, we’ve invested more than $265 million in infrastructure improvements to enable us to deliver safe, reliable water services to our customers.

One of our largest improvements to the distribution system was in the Village of Island Park, where main replacement was done in conjunction with the village‘s extensive drainage project, which will mitigate flooding issues and ease the minds of customers there during future storms.

"At Liberty, our reason for coming to work each day is keeping our customers’ water flowing,” said Chris Alario, President, Liberty New York Water. “To do so, and to do so well, we continuously look for ways to improve reliability and quality, build resiliency, and find innovative solutions that allow us to better serve our customers. The infrastructure improvements and upgrades we’ve made in the last five years are prime examples of that commitment.”

In addition to the distribution system, Liberty has been heavily focused on building and bringing new treatment facilities online to improve quality and ensure compliance with new and emerging water quality standards.

In 2022, Liberty completed construction and began operation of a two million-gallon-per-day Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) treatment system for the Glen Head Well Station for removal of Perfluorooctyl Sulfonate and Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOS/PFOA). This year, we will begin construction on a six million-gallon-per-day Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) plant for removal of 1,4-Dioxane at the Seaman’s Neck Treatment Plant in Levittown.

In Mill Neck, we have completed a new treatment facility that will provide safe, easy access for operation, be protected against tidal flooding, and continue to have a natural gas emergency generator, which will allow continuous reliable service during power outages.

In North Bellmore, we completed a new three million-gallon-per-day water supply well at the Newbridge Road Treatment Plant, and this year we are building an iron removal facility at our Charles Street plant in Merrick.

“We can assure customers that we are meeting and exceeding the newest regulations and investing the resources needed to do that,” said Brenda Wall, Director of Operations. “We work diligently to ensure we provide safe and reliable water to all customers, and this is a responsibility and commitment we are very proud to make.”

Liberty’s five-year plan includes investing nearly $260 million and replacing 270,000 feet of water main to continue our commitment to provide safe and reliable water to our customers and significantly reduce discolored water. We are also focused on replacing nearly 6,000 water meters for customers who have not yet been upgraded to the advanced metering infrastructure. The new meters will provide these customers with the power to monitor their own water usage in real-time and identify leaks before they cause structural damage and higher water bills. Once installed, the customer can download the EyeOnWater app from the Liberty website at www.libertyenergyandwater.com.
