PSEG LI Begins 7-Month Storm Hardening Project In Levittown

Since the "Power On" program started in 2020, the electric company upgraded more than 275 miles of circuits across Long Island.

UNIONDALE, NY — PSEG Long Island is taking steps to ensure the energy grid's reliability in Hicksville and Levittown.

The storm hardening work is part of the utility company's "Power On" program.

"PSEG Long Island is strengthening the electric lines that directly power homes and businesses because we know that electric reliability is more important than ever to our customers," said Peggy Keane, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Construction and Operations Services. "This Power On infrastructure improvement project in Hicksville and Levittown is part of our ongoing, multi-year effort to continue to improve electric reliability for our customers."

The work started earlier this month is expected to take up to seven months to complete.

Among the improvements:

  • Stronger poles: PSEG Long Island will replace some existing utility poles with stronger, more durable poles that are capable of withstanding winds up to 135 mph.
  • Narrow profiles: To help wires deflect falling limbs instead of catching them, PSEG Long Island will be installing shorter cross arms atop some poles.
  • Stronger wire: Current wire will be replaced with more resilient and durable wire.
  • Overall upgrades: PSEG Long Island will upgrade or replace worn equipment as necessary.

Crews will be working on these streets in Hicksville and Levittown:

  • North Newbridge Road between Mockingbird Lane and Flamingo Road
  • Newbridge Road between Flamingo Road and Albany Street
  • Rear property along Elmira Street between Newbridge Road and Blueberry Lane
  • Rear property along Blueberry Lane between Elmira Street and Genesee Street
  • Classic Drive between Genesee Street and Old Country Road
  • Rear property along Mockingbird Lane between N Newbridge Road and Orchid Road
  • Rear property along Pintail Lane and Kingfisher Road
  • Rear property along Falcon Lane and Blackbird Lane between Finch Lane and Flamingo Road
  • Rear property along Spindle Road between Herald Lane and Gulf Road
  • Rear property along Table Lane between Gulf Road and N Newbridge Road
  • Division Avenue between Spindle Road and Autumn Lane

Since the launch of Power On two years ago, more than 275 miles of the most vulnerable distribution mainline circuits on Long Island and in the Rockaways have been storm hardened with stronger poles, thicker wire and other modern equipment.
