LINDENHURST, NY — Lindenhurst High School’s symphony orchestra took home the gold at the 2024 New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Majors Festival at West Islip High School.

The student orchestra earned the Gold with Distinction rating under the direction of Kristin Lombardo. Gold with Distinction is the highest rating that NYSSMA bestows on performances by student-musicians, school officials said.

“Congratulations to our very talented symphony orchestra and their dedicated instructor, Ms. Lombardo,” said Robert Lombardo, Director of Fine and Performing Arts at the Lindenhurst School District. “This is a major accomplishment for these student musicians, and one I hope they will remember throughout their musical careers.”

The NYSSMA Majors Festival differs from other competitions throughout the year by providing a platform for larger ensembles to perform before panels of NYSSMA adjudicators.

The student musicians performed three pieces for two NYSSMA adjudicators who evaluated the orchestra and provided comments on the pieces.
