A Memorable

Trio

They are a trio, and they chant in unison

“Should, Must and Want”

and the three have been part of my world seemingly forever.

Yet each time I hear their chorus, the lyrics change, never the earlier words I remember

When I was young (and yes, that was ever so long ago,) it was simple to obey the combined reminders, suggestions and/or commandments.

I remember the earliest :

I should study more, I must keep hoping to succeed while

More than anything I wanted to go to the library and read.

Before too many moons had come and gone, and I was certainly no wiser, I recall new entreaties just a mite stronger:

I should go to college,

Even if I must do it at night,

Despite wanting funds for chasing untold rainbows.

The next time I heard their trio of soft reminders I was older (still not much wiser,) as once more I listened to a distinctively different set of lyrics:

I should try harder

And I must learn to worry less,

As well as read less, because

More than anything I wanted to be a good Mother.

Often the tunes the three combined voices sang were well received.

Still quite often for brief spans of time, their song went unheard as I drifted into the soft comfort of inertia.

Consequently, today it was a surprise when they resurrected and I listened to a new chorus sung by Should, Must and Want:

I should enjoy life more

I must be less reclusive, eat better and of course exercise more

Even though, I want to read, write and indulge in BBC Mysteries.

And tonight I wonder if the three voices all have another name, Conscience,

and it was always hidden behind the non de plume of Should, Must and Want.
