Heavy Rain, Potential Flash Flooding On The Way to Long Island

Any thunderstorm that develops could produce flash flooding in the area. See when to expect the worst of it in the latest forecast.

Torrential downpours could lead to flash flooding on Long Island Wednesday, forecasters say.

"The greatest risk for the heaviest showers and thunderstorms seems to be Wednesday afternoon/night," the National Weather Service said in forecast discussion Tuesday afternoon. "Any thunderstorm could produce locally heavy rainfall resulting in flash flooding across the area."

A window from around 6-11 p.m. Wednesday is when the weather service says there's the highest chance of thunderstorms.

Wednesday- A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 78. South wind 14 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night- Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 73. South wind around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Thursday- Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before noon, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 81. Southwest wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71.

Friday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 84.

Friday Night- A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72.

Saturday- A 40 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 83.
