Severe Storms Possible on Long Island

Here's what you need to know about potentially severe weather headed our way.

Stormy weather is in the forecast for Long Island Tuesday and Wednesday.

Showers will develop from west to east after midnight and continue through the day on Tuesday, the National Weather Service says. It will also be breezy, especially close to the coast. A few showers could be locally moderate to heavy at times and a few rumbles of thunder are also possible. The showers will taper off from west to east Tuesday evening.

Much warmer and humid conditions are expected on Wednesday ahead of a cold front. Showers and possible thunderstorms are forecast in the afternoon and evening. There's a slight risk of severe storms late Wednesday and Wednesday night as the cold front moves across the area.

The full forecast:

Tuesday- Rain before noon, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Patchy fog after noon. High near 72. Breezy, with a southeast wind 17 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Tuesday Night- Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, then a chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 68. South wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday- A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after noon. Patchy fog before 10am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high near 78. South wind 8 to 14 mph.

Wednesday Night- Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 63. Southwest wind 8 to 10 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday- Partly sunny, with a high near 70.

Thursday Night- A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60.

Friday- A 30 percent chance of showers before noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 70.

Friday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 60.

Saturday- Sunny, with a high near 71.
