Snow Blindsides Long Island; Winter Weather Advisory In Effect

Up to a half foot of snow is now expected to accumulate on the island through this morning.

Long Islanders are waking up Tuesday morning to a surprise sight out their windows. Just hours after forecasters were predicting just a dusting of snow for much of the region, things have changed big time.

A winter weather advisory is now in effect until 10 a.m. for the island. A total of 2-6 inches of snow is likely across the island. In Suffolk County, where many school districts have announced delayed openings, eight inches of snow is possible.

"Plan on slippery road conditions, including during the morning commute," the winter weather advisory says.
