LONG ISLAND, NY — The National Weather Service has issued the following special weather statement as a powerful coastal storm begins to impact the region.

"As temperatures slowly rise this evening, light snow should quickly change over to rain across Long Island, New York City and the suburbs just north and west, and across coastal and southeastern Connecticut, with at least a coating of accumulation, and as much as an inch farther away from the coast.
"As precipitation mixes with and changes to rain, road temperatures in these areas may still be below freezing even as air temperatures slowly rise to the mid and upper 30s, and a light glaze of ice may be possible on untreated surfaces. So plan on slippery conditions this evening even as temperatures slowly rise."

Any snow should turn to rain by midnight on the island. Coastal flood watches have now been upgraded to warnings across the island for Monday morning.

"Widespread moderate to locally major flooding of vulnerable areas is possible near the waterfront and shoreline," the weather service said.
