RIVERSIDE, NY — A former Medford man was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison Thursday for the slaying of his ex-girlfriend, a nurse who died in the hospital she finished her shift at earlier, Suffolk District Attorney Ray Tierney said.

Wayne Chambers, 51, was found guilty of second-degree murder for the fatal stabbing of his former girlfriend, Sandra McIntosh, 46, of Medford.

At around 7:43 p.m. on July 22, Chambers picked up McIntosh, a nurse with whom he had been in a relationship for six years until they broke up months before, in her car after her shift ended at Stony Brook University Hospital, prosecutors said, adding that at about 8:03 p.m., a 911 caller reported seeing him in the same car driving erratically and then stopping on Woodland Avenue in Holtsville.

Witnesses also saw Chambers outside the car in a physical altercation with McIntosh, and at some point during the altercation, he stabbed her at least 25 times including in her neck and back, puncturing her heart and lung, according to prosecutors.

When the witnesses heard McIntosh screaming, they came outside and saw Chambers physically assaulting her, and trying to drag her by her hair, but once he saw them, he jumped into her car and sped away, prosecutors said.

McIntosh died within two hours of the attack.

“This defendant stabbed his ex-girlfriend in cold blood and without remorse,” Tierney said. “My heart continues to go out to Sandra McIntosh’s loved ones. I hope this lengthy sentence provides them with some measure of justice after she was tragically taken from them by this defendant.”

After McIntosh's slaying, the Suffolk police tracked Chambers to a location in the Bronx, prosecutors said.

It was there that McIntosh’s 2010 white Lexus RX350 was found, according to prosecutors.

Red staining that appeared to be blood was seen on both the exterior and interior of the vehicle, prosecutors said.

It tested presumptively positive for blood, but many of those stains contained mixtures of DNA between Chambers and McIntosh, according to prosecutors.

Surveillance video evidence recovered across the street from McIntosh’s vehicle was found in the Bronx It showed the white SUV pulling up at around 10:39 p.m. on July 22, 2021, prosecutors said.

A man can be seen getting out of the driver’s side of the vehicle and walking away with what appeared to be a cellular phone in his hand, according to prosecutors.

Police testified that they spoke with a female acquaintance of Chambers, whose home was around one block away from where McIntosh’s vehicle was found, prosecutors said.

In sum and substance, she stated Chambers went to her home in the Bronx on the evening of July 22, 2021, and upon arriving at her home, she saw that Chambers had a cut on one of his index fingers that was covered by a Band and a bloody spot on his green shirt, according to prosecutors.

Cell site data placed Chamber’s cell phone near the murder scene, immediately after the murder, and it connected to a cell site within a mile of where McIntosh’s vehicle was found, coinciding with the surveillance video that captured the SUV being parked in the Bronx, prosecutors said.

On July 30, 2021, Suffolk’s Homicide Squad, Newburg City Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, and New York State Police found Chambers at a hotel in Newburg and placed him under arrest.
