LI Woman Victim Of $30,000 Phone Scam: Police

A Brooklyn man was arrested and charged in connection to the scheme, police said.

MINEOLA, NY — A Mineola woman was the victim of a phone scam, police said.

The 57-year-old victim was contacted on Monday by a man claiming to be a Microsoft employee. He notified her of a $30,000 gambling charge on her account, authorities said.

A short time later, the victim received a call from a second man claiming to work for Chase Fraud Protection.

The victim was instructed to remove $30,000 from her Chase account to satisfy the debt. She was told that an agent would pick up the cash at her residence, police said.

After withdrawing the money, the victim got suspicious and called police.

An investigation led to the arrest of Yongkang Weng, 31, of Brooklyn. He is charged with third-degree grand larceny, fifth-degree attempted conspiracy and second-degree attempted scheme to defraud.

He was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday.
