LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Island politicians, and those running for public office, are reacting to the shooting at a rally of former president Donald Trump on Saturday evening in Pennsylvania.

As shots rang out, Trump was seen with blood on his ear and face and he was whisked away from the stage. An audience member died, as did the shooter; two others were critically injured, the Secret Service said.

"Praying for President Trump and all supporters in Pennsylvania. Grateful for my law enforcement brothers and sisters who ran toward danger," Congressman Anthony D'Esposito (R-Island Park) said in a statement.

His opponent in the November race, Democratic Laura Gillen added, on X: "Hoping everyone is safe and the shooter is apprehended. There is no place for violence in our politics."

The shooting is being investigated as an assassination attempt, the Associated Press reported.

Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) also took to X: "We all pray that former President Trump is ok, as are his supporters. Violence, including political violence, is un-American and unacceptable."

Another Long Island Congressman, Rep. Nick LaLota (R-Hauppauge) offered "prayers for President Trump and for the safety of everyone at today’s Pennsylvania rally."

LaLota's challenger for the House's 1st District seat, Democrat John Avlon, said: "Political violence is what we all must stand up against. It has no place in our country."

Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine said: "Hatred and acts of violence toward an elected official or candidate for office regardless of political affiliation have no place in this country. As Americans, we stand united on the principles that make our country strong. While there are no reported threats in Suffolk County at this time, my office will continue to monitor the situation."

Back in Nassau, County Executive Bruce Blakeman also reflected on the shooting. "Our thoughts and prayers are with my friend, our 45th President, and hopefully our next president, Donald J. Trump, for a speedy recovery. President Trump is the most resilient person I’ve ever met and I’m confident that he will recover and come back stronger than ever. God bless Donald J. Trump."
