New York One of the Worst States to Have a Baby, Report Says

The Empire State is ranked in the bottom 10 on WalletHub's "Best and Worst States to Have a Baby" survey. Surprised?

New York is one of the worst places in the country to have a baby, according to a new report.

WalletHub ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia in its 2015 Best and Worst States to Have a Baby report. The Empire State came in at an overall ranking of No. 46.

New York was ranked No. 46 for budget, No. 47 for baby-friendly environment and No. 12 for healthcare for new moms and babies.

Having a baby in the United States is an expensive endeavor. The average cost of a delivery in 2015 is $10,002, not including an extra $5,238 for a C-section. In the Netherlands, that figure is $2,824. In Spain, it’s $2,251. The U.S. has the most expensive birthing costs in the world, according to WalletHub.

Out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia, New York has the No. 49 highest annual infant care costs and the No. 44 lowest number of child centers per capita.

Looking to give birth? The least expensive state to have a baby is Vermont and the most expensive state is Mississippi, WalletHub reports.
