Weekend Fun at Sands Point Preserve

Outdoor activities and a night of show tunes at the Guggenheim Estate.

The Sands Point Preserve offers outdoor activities and a night of Broadway show tunes this weekend. Here’s what’s on tap for Saturday and Sunday.

Early Morning Beach Walk, July 18

Join us at the beach on Saturday, July 18, at 8:15 a.m. for an exploratory walk. Besides the beautiful views across Long Island Sound, we’ll see tall bluffs, and take a close look at the plants and animals that can live in salt water. Observe how these living things can also tolerate the movement of the incoming and outgoing tides, several times a day.

Summer Photo Fun, July 18

Do you have a digital camera or good phone camera? Bring it for a picture scavenger hunt! Pick up your map and clues at the Castle Gould Visitor Center any time between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Find the mystery locations and photograph interesting natural and man-made features at the preserve to “prove” your success! This event is part of a four-season series that started with an April walk.…you may participate in one, two, three, or all four. The more often you participate, the better your library of seasonal change photographs will be!

Pond Exploration, July 19

Our fresh water pond and its surroundings is a beautiful habitat for birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and insects that are all particularly active in the summer months. We’ll get our “hands dirty” as we explore the site with nets, buckets, and magnifying lenses. For your own close up view, bring a clean (preferably white) washed and rinsed take-out container (we will have some to share). Wear shoes, sneakers, or boots that can get muddy! Two sessions: 11-11:45 a.m. or 12-12:45 p.m.

Admission to these outdoor programs are $15 per car / $5 per car with Annual Pass.

Broadway Showstoppers II, Saturday, July 18

Theater lovers won’t want to miss Showstoppers II, a musical revue that salutes the most popular hits from the Great White Way. Produced by Joanne Fried and Helene Tiger, the performances feature top-flight talent, backed by an orchestra. Doors open at 7:45 PM. Tickets include wine, soft drinks and dessert and coffee.
