Failure To Use Signal Leads Cops To Gun, 'Trap' Filled With Drugs

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A traffic stop led to a hidden compartment, a massive drug seizure and a stolen gun, police said.

On Monday, just before 10 p.m., New Rochelle detectives stopped a driver for failing to use a turn signal while turning from Lincoln Avenue to Memorial Highway.

What they found next was far more serious.

During the stop, detectives spotted what appeared to be heroin in a Ziploc bag in a center console cupholder. A Narcotics K9 was called. The dog confirmed that the substance was indeed narcotics. The two occupants of the car were placed under arrest.

During a more thorough search of the car, a hidden compartment was found. The "trap" contained a stolen .32 caliber Keltec handgun, 85 grams of cocaine, 245 oxycodone pills and 110 ecstasy pills were found, according to police.

Police say that $4261 in small bills were also found in the possession of the two men.

Ronny Mota, 34, of the Bronx and Biang Velasquez, 38, of New York City were each charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon, two felony counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance and felony possession of stolen property.
