New Rochelle 3-Year-Old Girl Killed By SUV Crossing Harlem Street

NEW YORK — The 3-year-old who was struck and killed by a car yesterday evening is being identified by New York City media outlets as a child from New Rochelle.

The tragedy unfolded as the little girl was crossing the street with her mother and siblings at around 7:40 p.m. on Thursday, according to the NYPD.

The four were crossing Lenox Ave. and West 135th St., close to Harlem Hospital, when, according to police, the 40-year-old driver of a Nissan Pathfinder made a left turn and struck the children.

According to police, in addition to the 3-year-old girl who was fatally struck, a 2-year-old child and a woman were injured in the crash, with a 4-month-old baby also at the scene.

Following the crash, the driver got out of the vehicle and rushed the girl to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

The child has been identified Friday as Jaynelyse Valdez of New Rochelle, according to ABC7 NY. Her 2-year-old brother suffered minor injuries. The 37-year-old mother and a 4-month-old boy were not hurt.

The New York Daily News reports that the child who died was just days away from celebrating her fourth birthday.

An NYPD spokesperson said that the driver then returned to the scene and there were no immediate arrests made. The crash is still under investigation.
