2 Rescued As Fire Rips Through LI Home Monday Night: Police

The man and woman were saved from the Riverhead home, which was engulfed in flames and blanketed with heavy smoke, police say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — Firefighters rescued two adults after a fire ripped through a Riverhead home Monday night, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, a 911 call came in about 6:42. p.m. about a house fire on Newton Avenue; police officers arrived to find the home engulfed with flames and heavy smoke. Officers found one resident near the front door, who said that an adult man and woman were both still trapped inside.

Officers tried to enter the home but retreated due to the heavy smoke and fire, police said. The woman was able to get to a front bedroom window and officers were able to pull her to safety, police said. Officers were then able to go to the rear of the house and pull the man out of a rear bedroom window, police said.

The Riverhead Volunteer Fire Department, Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and the Riverhead Fire Marshal's Office responded, along with other fire departments and ambulance corps, to extinguish the blaze.

The three residents were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by ambulance personnel and released. A volunteer firefighter was transported to Stony Book University Hospital for treatment of a burn injury, police said.
