3 Boaters Rescued From Long Island Sound Thursday Night: Police

WADING RIVER, NY — Three boaters were rescued Thursday night off Wading River Beach, police said.

According to Riverhead Town police, a 911 call came in at about 9:38 p.m. from someone who said they saw three to four people aboard a small boat on the Long Island Sound, and who said they weren't sure if the boaters were in distress.

Riverhead police officers were able to locate the boat, which was about two miles north of Wading River Beach, authorities said. With the help of the Riverhead Police Department's dive team, the United States Coast Guard, the Suffolk County Police Department's marine unit, and the Wading River, Rocky Point and Sound Beach Fire Departments, the three adults were brought safely to shore at the Wading River Beach and required no medical attention, police said.

After an investigation, the three, all from Central Islip, were issued several Riverhead town code citations for various watercraft safety and fishing violations, police said.
