LI Weather: 50 MPH Wind Gusts, Whiteout Conditions Possible

A hazardous weather outlook has been issued for Long Island.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Long Island and the commute to and from the office Wednesday may be a rough one.

Rain Monday night will turn to snow for a few hours early Tuesday. It should end by before sunrise, but with temperatures in the low-20s, any residual moisture on the roadways could turn into black ice. Less than inch of snow is expected to accumulate.

"Motorists are urged to use extra caution while traveling early Wednesday morning," the National Weather Service says.

An Arctic cold front will pass through the region Wednesday afternoon into the early evening. This front may be accompanied by a line of snow showers and/or snow squalls as well as wind gusts of 45 to 50 mph.

Brief whiteout conditions and a quick coating to inch of snow will be possible with any snow squalls, the NWS says. This could make for a hazardous travel conditions for the evening commute.

A snow squall is an intense short-lived burst of heavy snowfall that leads to a quick reduction in visibilities and is often accompanied by gusty winds.

The combination of quick reductions in visibilities and sudden slick conditions on roadways can often lead to high speed wrecks, pileups, and subsequently injuries and fatalities. In December 2016, six people were injured in a 29-vehicle pileup on Sunrise Highway in Bohemia during intense snow squalls.
