50 MPH Winds Could Knock Out Power on Long Island

Damaging wind gusts and isolated weak tornadoes are possible. See the latest timeline for potentially severe weather.

There is a marginal risk for severe thunderstorm development overnight into early Saturday morning on Long Island.

"The primary threat is damaging wind gusts and isolated weak tornadoes," the National Weather Service says. "In addition to the thunderstorm threat, locally heavy rain will be capable of producing areas of urban and poor drainage flooding."

The rain will likely end by sunrise, but strong winds may still cause problems. A wind advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday.

Winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected. That's strong enough to knock down small tree limbs and branches, resulting in isolated to scattered power outages, the NWS says.

The storm system approaching the island is believed to have already spawned a tornado in Maryland Friday night.

A weak tornado struck Fishers Island off the Long Island coast last Monday morning.

Highs will be in the mid-50s on both days this weekend, but we will get sunny skies come Sunday.
