First Day of Spring to Bring Snow to Riverhead

Really? On the first day of spring? Come on.

Mother Nature apparently does not own a calendar.

Up to 3 inches of snow is expected to fall across Long Island on Friday–the first day of spring.

Snow will likely begin Friday morning, with 2-3 inches currently predicted to accumulate by the end of the day. The snow may change to rain sometime Friday night with the precipitation ending by Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

“Since paved surfaces absorb a considerable amount of warmth from the sun this time of the year, it would have to snow hard to make roads slippery during the daylight hours,” an AccuWeather.com forecast reads. “However, even a light to moderate snow falling at night or early in the morning can be enough to make roads slushy.”

Before we get to the snow, the rest of Wednesday will be sunny, but windy. Wind gusts will near 40 mph across most of the island. On the East End, a wind advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. and gusts of up to 50 mph have the potential to cause some isolated power outages in the area, the NWS says.
