RIVERHEAD, NY — New "government auction" signs dotting the Riverhead landscape are a scam, officials said.

According to Riverhead Town police, residents should ignore the signs, that announce a call-in "government auction." Riverhead police officers have been removing the signs, which are a violation of town code, officials said.

The public has been asked to call police at 631-727-4500 with any locations they've spotted that have signs; residents are urged not to call the number on the signs, police said.
