AQUEBOGUE, NY — The smallest of children gave a big "thank you" to veterans recently with a moving tribute.

Aquebogue Elementary School recently hosted 18 local veterans and service members for its inaugural Veterans Appreciation Walk. Each veteran was greeted and welcomed as a guest of honor by a student host, who was either a relative or a member of the school’s student leadership team, the district said.

Leading up to the start of the walk, Riverhead High School musicians played patriotic songs.

"Our students were such enthusiastic hosts," said Aquebogue Elementary School Assistant Principal Gary Karlson. "While we often discuss teamwork and responsibility with them, being able to express gratitude to the men and women who demonstrate these values at the highest level was an impactful experience for the students, staff and guests."

The walk commenced with students from all grades lining the decorated halls and singing a song of gratitude to the visiting veterans and service members as they strolled through the school.

"Countless smiles, handshakes and fist bumps were shared between guests, students and staff. Tears of joy were spilled as well due to the overwhelming atmosphere of support and unity," the district said.

Following the walk, student hosts and veterans and service members enjoyed cake, coffee and juice together as the guests discussed their service to their country and community. The event concluded with the presentation of a personalized "thank you" poster signed by Aquebogue Elementary School students and staff to each guest.
