RIVERHEAD, NY — A woman who was desperately trying to give a feral cat a home is devastated: Just before she brought the long-haired beauty home safe, the cat was lost.

According to Anna Wade, the cat was first seen in Riverhead; she'd spent a length of time trying to trap the cat, so that she could have it spayed.

"Sadly there was an error and before it was neutered, vaccinated and ear tipped it was mistakenly given to and picked up by the wrong person. That person drove it to the Calverton area, near Tractor Supply, and released it," friend Rosanne Malusa wrote.

"This cat is now totally lost, and needs our help," Malusa said. "This cat could die without our help."

Wade said she called the cat Greta, after activist Greta Thunberg.

"She turned up here a year ago, she's such a pretty cat," Wade said. Wade said Greta appeared every morning at about 6:30 a.m. to be fed. In March, she'd just brought another cat and was trying to trap Greta so she could have her spayed.

But due to the mishap, Greta is now lost in a place totally unfamiliar to her, Wade said.

"I'm sick with grief," she said.
