Major Storm Expected To Bring Heavy Wind, Rain To LI Tuesday: NWS

Wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour are possible on the coastline and across the East End, the National Weather Service says.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Just days after snow was pretty much a no-show on Long Island, Mother Nature is set to send a storm, with heavy winds and rain, to the area Tuesday night into Wednesday.

According to Bryan Ramsey, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office at Upton, a flood watch will be in effect for Long Island, with 2 to 2.5 inches of rain expected, falling about a half inch to three quarters of an inch per hour, Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Sustained winds of 20 to 25 miles per hour are expected to begin Tuesday, ramping up to 30 to 40 miles per hour across Long Island Tuesday night, with maximum wind gusts of up to 50 to 60 miles per hour along the coastline and on the East End, Ramsey said.

Temperatures Tuesday are expected to be in the low 50s to upper 40s Tuesday night.

With the amount of rain expected, coupled with strong winds and wet soil, Long Islanders should be prepared for toppled trees and power outages, he said.
