New Cherry Blossom Program Will Honor Veterans In Riverhead

RIVERHEAD, NY — A new cherry blossom tree program in Riverhead will honor the sacrifices of the nation's veterans, town officials said.

The Town of Riverhead's Veterans Advisory Committee, in collaboration with the local community, is embarking on a mission to fill Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton with the "delicate beauty of cherry blossom trees, symbolizing respect, appreciation, and remembrance for our nation's heroes," town officials said.

"The idea came from the Veterans Advisory Committee to serve as a poignant reminder of the bravery and selflessness of our veterans and active-duty members, and enhance the park, which is undergoing changes with the addition of an ice rink, and a new parking lot," said Riverhead Town Councilman Ken Rothwell, town board oiaison to the Veterans Advisory Committee. "The park is an ideal location, right across the street from Calverton National Cemetery."

Individuals will be invited to purchase a 6-foot tall cherry blossom trees, which will be accompanied by a 12- by 6-inch marker bearing the name of the honored veteran.

"The markers will stand as enduring tributes to the sacrifice, courage, and patriotism displayed by those who have served our country," town officials said.

A cost of $675, will include the tree, plaque, planting and maintenance. Families may purchase more than one tree for each veteran.

According to town officials, the vision is by next spring: "We can gather for a cherry blossom tree festival at Veterans Memorial Park. The Town of Riverhead invites all to participate. Through this collective effort, the park will blossom with vibrant hues, echoing the resilience and spirit of our beloved veterans."

"We are thrilled to witness the progress and unity that the Cherry Blossom Tree Program brings to our community," said Riverhead Town Supervisor Tim Hubbard. "This initiative fosters a sense of togetherness and gratitude among our residents. As we plant these trees of honor, we sow the seeds of a stronger, more connected community, where the legacy of our veterans continues to flourish."
