LONG ISLAND, NY — The old adage, "In like a lion, out like a lamb," may ring true next week, with the possibility of a nor'easter edging into the Long Island forecast.

According to Joe Pollina, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Upton, there is a possibility of a nor'easter, or a coastal storm, impacting the area, "but it's too early to pinpoint the exact details."

Should the coastal storm evolve, it's expected to hit Tuesday night into Wednesday, Pollina said. "A nor'easter is a coastal storm — it doesn't mean there's snow associated with it — usually with strong winds in a northeasterly flow," he said.

An area of low pressure that's developing off the southeast coast and heading northeast could pave the way for the coastal storm, he said.

As of Friday, there's a 30 to 40 percent chance of rain Tuesday night into Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to be in the high to upper 40s on Tuesday and low to mid-50s on Wednesday, he said.

"How strong the winds are and if we will see coastal flooding are details that will be ironed out as we get closer to the event," Pollina said. The possible storm might also pass east of Long Island and not impact the area. "Stay tuned," he said.
