Odds of Accumulating Snow For Long Island Rising

An approaching coastal storm has the potential to cause problems on the roadways Thursday. See the latest projected snow totals map.

Long Island is now expected to see at least a little accumulating snow from a coastal storm that will impact the region on Thursday, the National Weather Service says.

It's the timing of any wintry precipitation, though, that may cause some travel problems come rush hour Thursday evening. Forecasters say the window of 4-7 p.m. is when snow is most likely to be falling on the island before it changes over to rain as temperatures climb.

Parts of the North Shore could see 1-2 inches of snow accumulation. The rest of the island will likely see nothing more than an inch and any snow that does accumulate should quickly be washed away by the rain, which isn't expected to stop falling until Friday afternoon.

"This storm is still a couple of days away, so track and timing changes are possible and could result in further changes to the forecast," the NWS said in a forecast discussion Tuesday night.
