Riverhead High School Teen Stabbed Off School Grounds: Police

In an abundance of caution, additional police presence was at the school Thursday night and will be there Friday morning, authorities say.

RIVERHEAD, NY — A Riverhead High School student was stabbed in an altercation that took place off school ground Thursday afternoon, police said.

According to Riverhead police, at about 3:36 p.m., a report came in about a juvenile male with a laceration to his arm in the nurse's office at Riverhead High School. He was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center by Riverhead Volunteer Ambulance Corps for treatment of a non-life threatening injury, police said.

A subsequent investigation revealed that the incident took place an hour and a half after high school dismissal, and did not take place on school grounds, police said. The boy was not cooperative with police and requested no further police action, officials said.

The Riverhead Central School District also sent out a notice to the Blue Waves community.

"At approximately 3:30 p.m. today, almost an hour and a half after student dismissal, a Riverhead High School student returned to the high school requesting medical assistance for an apparent stabbing injury to his arm experienced in an altercation that occurred off of school grounds," said Interim Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich. "Medical assistance was provided and an ambulance was called to transport the student to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Law enforcement was engaged and an investigation was opened."

She added: "The district is cooperating with law enforcement in its ongoing investigation of this matter. In an abundance of caution, additional police presence will be on site at our high school this evening for the scheduled basketball game as well as tomorrow morning."
