National Weather Service issues statement.
The National Weather Service has issued the following special weather statement for Long Island:
...ENHANCED RISK OF FIRE GROWTH AND SPREAD TODAY... NORTHWEST WINDS GUSTING TO 30 TO 35 MPH AND RELATIVE HUMIDITIES DROPPING TO 30 TO 40 PERCENT WILL RESULT IN AN ENHANCED RISK FOR THE GROWTH AND SPREAD OF ANY WILDFIRES THAT DEVELOP TODAY. THE RISK WILL BE GREATER IN AND AROUND NEW YORK CITY...AND ACROSS LONG ISLAND...WHERE WINDS WILL BE HIGHER AND RELATIVE HUMIDITIES WILL BE LOWER. BE ESPECIALLY CAREFUL WITH ANY OUTDOOR BURNING OR DISCARDING OF SMOKING MATERIALS.
