A Spring-Like Start, But Then a Rapid Temperature Drop: Long Island Weekend Weather

Plus an early look at the Thanksgiving forecast.

Saturday may be the last day we hit 60 degrees on Long Island for a long time. So get outside and enjoy it if you can.

High pressure over the region into Saturday will maintain clear skies, above average daytime temperatures, and cool nighttime temperatures, the National Weather Service says.

A strong cold front will approach late day Saturday and move through at night, bringing some showers to the region. Sunday will be much colder. The high of near 46 degrees will actually be reached during the early morning hours Sunday. By 8 a.m., it will be about 42 degrees and gusty winds will make it feel more like the low-30s.

Looking into the holiday workweek, Monday morning will be freezing. Likely literally. The temperature will be near 31 degrees, and the wind chill temperature is expected to fall below 20.

How about the forecast for holiday travel? AAA is projecting that 48.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home Wednesday, Nov. 23, to Sunday, Nov. 27, which will be the greatest volume since 2007, just prior to the Great Recession, according to AccuWeather.

A storm has the potential to cause travel disruptions by the middle of the week in major hubs such as Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Detroit, Cincinnati, Nashville, Atlanta and New Orleans, AccuWeather says.

By Thanksgiving Day, the same storm could produce drenching rain along the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts with any snow possible well inland.

As of now, the National Weather Service is calling for mostly cloudy skies and a 40 percent chance of showers on Thanksgiving Day.
