LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Island's two resident groundhogs — Holtsville Hal and Malverne Mel — will make their prognostications on Thursday at 7 a.m.

If a groundhog sees its shadow after stirring from hibernation on Groundhog Day, there will be six more weeks of winter, but if not, spring could arrive early. In the past, the two little guys have not always agreed.

Hal will tell all about whether there will be six more weeks of winter or not at his home at the Town of Brookhaven's Holtsville Ecology Site and Animal Preserve before a crowd. The preserve's menagerie, which includes a Eurasian lynx, Leonardo DiCatbrio, a Bobcat, a Bald Eagle, and an American Buffalo to name a few, will also be available for viewing until 11 a.m.

Mel will make his prognostication at Crossroads Farm at Grossmann's Malverne.

The farm is located at 480 Hempstead Ave., Malverne.
