Nearly 12,000 Without Power On LI As Summer Thunderstorms Strike

LONG ISLAND, NY — Nearly 12,000 PSEG Long Island customers were without power Thursday afternoon as powerful thunderstorms struck on one of the hottest days of the year.

As of 3:15 p.m., PSEG says 11,815 of its customers have reported outages. More than half of those outages are in northern Nassau County. See the outage map.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for parts of Suffolk County until 4 p.m. A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. in Nassau.

Intense thunderstorm lines can produce brief tornadoes and widespread significant wind damage. Although a tornado is not immediately likely, it is best to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. These storms may cause serious injury and significant property damage.

A flash flood warning is in effect until 6 p.m. for northern Nassau and northwestern Suffolk County.

A heat advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. across the island with heat index temperatures approaching 100 degrees.

Thursday Afternoon- Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 90. Heat index values as high as 97. South wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday Night- Scattered showers and thunderstorms before 8pm. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming clear, with a low around 73. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday- Sunny, with a high near 91. Light and variable wind becoming southwest 5 to 10 mph in the morning.

Friday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 72. Southwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Saturday- Sunny, with a high near 90. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon.

Saturday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 73.

Sunday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 93.

Sunday Night- Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73.
