Man Appears To Have Drowned Off Fire Island National Seashore : PD

SHIRLEY, NY — An elderly man apparently drowned off Fire Island National Seashore Tuesday morning, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, the body of an elderly man was found floating on the bay side of Fire Island National Seashore in Shirley at 10:53 a.m.

Police said it appeared the man drowned.

The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin; homicide is investigating, police said.

The drowning death is the second reported this week: A man who was pulled from the water on July 14 and died in apparent drowning at Outer Beach at Smith Point County Park Sunday has been identified as Michael Petruzzo, 64, police said.
