SMITHTOWN, NY — Mohawk, an 8-month-old short-haired male black and white tuxedo kitten, is the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week.

He arrived at the Smithtown Animal Shelter with his littermates as part of the town’s Trap, Neuter, Release program (TNR).

"While Mohawk took some time to trust humans, and is still a little shy when meeting new faces, he is incredibly loving and affectionate with his caretakers," the shelter wrote. "Once you make his acquaintance, Mohawk will devote your time together getting his fair share of TLC. Mohawk loves doing figure eights between his people’s ankles, falling asleep on a cozy lap, and rubbing against your shins."

The Smithtown Animal Shelter said it believes Mohawk would do best in a quiet home. However, a home with older children, other cats, and possibly dogs would be OK as well, the shelter wrote.

There are currently a variety of male and female cats and kittens available to adopt or foster.

"If you are looking for a fun-loving, yarn-tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two," the shelter stated.

All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian.

Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only.

To inquire about the Pet of the Week or to meet your potential soulmate, please call the Smithtown Animal Shelter at 631-360-7575.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers and kennel attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.

The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time.
