SMITHTOWN, NY — Chester, a 14-year-old domestic short-haired older fella with a stunning all-black coat, is the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week.

"This sweet boy fell upon hard times when his beloved human father fell too ill to care for himself," the shelter wrote. "Despite this heartbreaking turn of events, Chester still has a tremendous amount of joy and happiness to share, and deserves a second chance to find his forever home. We’re determined to write a new happy ever after for him!"

Shelter staff said they can tell Chester was showered with love.

"Chester is incredibly outgoing and always eager to greet new friends," they wrote. "It is nearly impossible to resist his charming nature when he looks up at you with his gorgeous, green gemstone eyes. This gentleman has an amazing personality that will captivate any cat-loving human. He is happy, healthy and would make a wonderful addition to one lucky family’s heart and home."

Chester was previously accustomed to being an indoor/outdoor cat.

"As such, he will require a home that will commit to keeping him strictly inside," the shelter wrote. "He would do well in most homes including those with kids and likely other pets."

There are currently a variety of male and female cats and kittens available to adopt or foster.

"If you are looking for a fun-loving, yarn-tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two," the shelter stated.

All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian.

Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only.

To inquire about the Pet of the Week or to meet your potential soulmate, please call the Smithtown Animal Shelter at 631-360-7575.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers and kennel attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.

The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time.
