SMITHTOWN, NY — Midnight, a 9-year-old black male domestic shorthair, is the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week.

"Midnight was living in a home bringing love and happiness to his family which included a large breed dog sibling," the shelter wrote. "Unfortunately, circumstances changed when Midnight’s owner had to relocate to a place that does not permit furry family members."

This "majestically silky boy" is quiet and calm, just like the first hour of a new day.

"He is shy at first, but after spending a little time with him, Midnight will open up and show his incredibly sweet and loving nature," the shelter wrote. "He enjoys a gentle petting and appreciates the simple pleasure of companionship. Midnight has been through a heartbreak, and deserves a lucky family he can love unconditionally all his own."

Midnight would thrive in a serene home with older children, mellow dogs and possibly cats, according to the shelter. He is healthy and well mannered.

Midnight came to the shelter declawed. He must be a strictly indoor kitty, for his own safety, the shelter wrote.

There are currently a variety of male and female cats and kittens available to adopt or foster.

"If you are looking for a fun-loving, yarn-tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two," the shelter stated.

All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian.

Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only.

To inquire about the Pet of the Week or to meet your potential soulmate, please call the Smithtown Animal Shelter at 631-360-7575.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers and kennel attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.

The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time.
